Unification Update: “Move team,” relocating academic programs, campus safety & security

We hope you had a warm and refreshing winter break. The Facilities and Capital Projects teams have been hard at work on the next steps to unify our campuses in San Francisco at the start of the fall 2022 semester. Here are the most recent updates:
Move Team
A “move team” was established and met several times prior to the holiday break. This team is responsible for coordinating the activities required to get the programs and offices moved to their new San Francisco locations for fall 2022. The team consists of:

The team will be working on refining the schedule and activities necessary to prepare for the move and engaging staff and faculty in the effort. The college will be hiring a moving company to assist with the physical relocation of equipment and furniture.
Relocating Academic Programs on the San Francisco Campus
Efforts to locate academic programs on the San Francisco campus are underway, and we continue to make adjustments based on input from department chairs and faculty, with the support of the deans. Several locations near campus that may house Ceramics, Sculpture, Jewelry and Metal Arts, Photography, and Printmedia are being explored, and faculty have toured the sites. A recent adjustment to plans for 1111 Eighth Street includes housing Textiles in the space vacated by A2 Cafe, the Student Lounge, and in the Nave, based on feedback from the department chair.
Blueprints for Animation, Gaming, and the First Year Program will be submitted for a building permit by mid-February 2022, with plans to select a general contractor by April. Construction is slated for the summer. The architect for the exhibitions program was selected, and a tour of Oakland’s Osher Gallery was completed. Design work has started and plans will be presented to relevant stakeholders soon.
Painting and Drawing studios along Hubbell Street have recently been completed. The former Center for the Arts and Public Life space was converted over the past several weeks, and now includes a studio space, storage, a changing area for models, and a separate conference space. We look forward to working with CCA’s recently hired Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging—who oversees the Center for the Arts and Public Life—to identify and develop a space for the Center.
Campus Safety and Security
We are aware of the growing tent encampment on the corner of Irwin and Eighth. The Facilities team is working with the City of San Francisco’s Homeless Outreach Team (SFHOT), as well as District 10 Supervisor Shaman Walton’s office. SFHOT has visited the site several times, offering shelter and assistance to the unhoused. So far, however, the encampment has disappeared for a few days only to reappear again. We continue to urge compassion and patience, as we work with the City and Supervisor on efforts to resolve this challenging city-wide issue.
