The Finishing and Sandblasting Room 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when the building is open. Please refer to the academic calendar for any building closures due to holidays or events.
Current Students, Faculty, and Staff, with an n-95 dust mask, may access the Finishing and Sandblasting Room 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when the building is open.
Sand and Media blasters may require additional orientations to operate. Please contact a studio manager at shops@cca.edu for more information.
About the Fabrication: Finishing and Sandblasting
The Finishing and Sandblasting room (D126)is an open-access space for sanding, shaping, carving, and finishing unfinished wood, foam, and plastic, as well as the home of our three sand and media blasters for finishing cleaning metal and other approve materials. The combination of downdraft tables and a ceiling-mounted air scrubber help improve the air quality, though an N95 dust mask or respirator MUST still be worn to work in this space.
Various shaping and carving tools are available at the Resource Hub for checkout: angle grinders, pneumatic die grinders, powered sanders, and Foredom rotary tools. Basic sanding discs and 1/8" rotary bits are provided to be compatible with tools that students checkout from the Tool Center. And, all users are encouraged to invest in the specialty bits their projects will require, the Tool Center selection is limited.
We would also recommend all students investing in a half-face respirator with n-95 cartridges. These are available at Arch, SF Paint Source, or other local retailers.
