*******All students who have completed a Metal Shop orientation within the past two years must still undergo a “30 minute refresher” orientation in the new Simpson Family building facility before access can be obtained. Please attend the first 30 minutes of one of our open orientations to complete this.

Current Students, Faculty, and Staff may access the Metal Shop after completing a tool safety orientation either through a class or orientation session. All users must stop by the Tool Center to check out an Access Card when coming to use the Metal Shop.

Due to academic program needs and the large volume of students that this space supports, CCA Shops are not available to alumni at this time.

About the Fabrication: Metal Shop

The Metal Shop (D133), located on the first floor of Double Ground, offers a space for various metal fabrication techniques such as cold forming, machining, mechanical fastening, and welding.
There is an on-suite Metal Grinding room (D133A) in which offers grinding and sanding machines for ferrous and non ferrous metals.

All users are required to wear ANSI Z87+ rated safety glasses with side shields and closed toe shoes at all times in the Metal Shop. Long hair must be tied back, loose or dangling jewelry or lanyards must be removed, long sleeves should be rolled up. Hearing protection is required for welder and induction forge operators. headphones and earbuds are not allowed in the Metal Shop at any time.

The equipment in this shop is exclusively geared toward working with metal and includes a well-stocked bench set of bicycle mechanic tools and vise-mounted bike stands. Like several other shops, the Metal Shop is a well-lit space equipped with compressed air and rubber-mat flooring. Stationary equipment includes:

ORIENTATION DATES

An orientation is required to work in both the Metal Welding and Cold Shops and all CCA students, faculty, and staff may attend an orientation. At an orientation in the Metal Shop, you will learn general rules and policies for all the CCA shops, in addition to some Shop specific policies. In a Cold Shop orientation, you will learn and practice basic tool safety and use on the bandsaws, sanders, coldsaw, and drill press. In a Welding Shop orientation, you will learn and practice basic tool safety and use on the MIG welder, and grinders.

Fall 2024 Orientations:

Welding and Cold Metal working orientations will alternate weekly until the week of November 5th 2024. If you are uncertain about your orientation status, please contact a studio manager.

    • No orientations available on the weekends.

Each orientation is 1-1/2 hours long. You must arrive on time and stay for the entire session. Please wear closed toe, leather or canvas shoes; all other personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided. There is no sign-up for Open Orientations, students should simply show up on time and able to attend for the entire orientation. Faculty can fill out this form to request to reserve the Metal Shop during class time, including to schedule an in class orientation.

After attending an orientation, you'll be able to check out the Metal Shop Access Card from the Tool Center. Check out this card when you come to work in the shop so that studio staff know you have attended an orientation.
